Lab Director

Research Labs

Lead semester-long research programs where teenagers conduct original research projects. Guide students from question formulation through publication-ready work.

PhD or no PhD, there are multiple paths to become an expert in research education. Traditional PhD programs are only one way to get a foundation. Excellence in how to lead independent research, teach, and mentor has to be acquired and demonstrated through experience. SoTS Lab Directors are more than experienced educators. They are developers of next-generation research education methodologies. If you have refined your approach through years of hands-on practice and believe you represent the forefront of how teenagers learn to do real science, we want to hear from you.

What we look for:

PhD or equivalent research experience in a scientific field
Track record of published research
Experience as a mentor to students or early-career researchers
Passion to make research accessible to teenagers

What you get:

Design and lead a research lab focused on your area of expertise
Guide small groups (up to 6 students) through the full research cycle
Flexible format: online or in-person, design schedule that works for you

Course Instructor

Research Skills Courses

Teach research skills courses to motivated teenagers. Two paths: teach our current curriculum or propose your own course.

We offer two paths for course instructors. Option A: Teach a current course from our curriculum (Applied Statistics with R, Applied Machine Learning with Python, Modeling and Simulations with Wolfram Mathematica, Practical Microscopy, Practical Spectroscopy). Option B: We welcome new course proposals based on your area(s) of expertise. Course can be taught online or on-site in your location (we work on logistics with you). Include a 4 to 8 week curriculum outline with clear objectives.

What we look for:

Proficiency in the course subject matter (demonstrate through portfolio, credentials, or assessment)
Experience with small group instruction, preferably with teenagers
Ability to follow established curriculum while you adapt to student needs
Hands-on approach (not lecture only)

Research Leadership Mentor

Research Leadership Program

Guide student leaders who build and manage their own research groups. Teach them how to recruit teams, define research directions, run productive sessions, and lead projects to completion.

The Research Leadership Program teaches students how to lead research: build teams, define directions, run productive sessions, and guide projects to completion. Mentors work with small groups of student leaders (up to 5 per cohort) in biweekly sessions over two semesters. You will help them build research teams within SoTS clubs, allocate resources, establish feedback cultures, and navigate the real challenges of how to manage people and projects. This is not a lecture series. Students bring real situations and you work through them together.

What we look for:

Experience as a manager of professional research teams (PI, lab manager, research director, or equivalent)
Track record of how to lead projects from conception to completion
Demonstrated excellence in how to teach or mentor teenagers
Strong skills in project management, team dynamics, and decision-making under uncertainty
Ability to coach rather than lecture, to guide students through real problems they encounter

Biweekly sessions over Zoom with small cohorts (up to 5 students)
