Code of Conduct
Society of Teen Scientists
Effective Date: February 4, 2026
Our Purpose
The Society of Teen Scientists (SoTS) exists for one reason: to advance science. Our community brings together young researchers to learn, collaborate, and contribute to scientific knowledge. Every interaction within SoTS — whether in labs, courses, online discussions, or events — should support this mission.
We are here to do science. All discussions, activities, and interactions within SoTS must remain focused on science, research, academics, and professional development.
Core Principles
- Science First. All communication and activities within SoTS must be related to science, research, education, or professional growth. We are a scientific community, and our shared focus is what makes us effective.
- Respect and Inclusion. Treat every member with dignity and respect regardless of background. We welcome teen scientists from all over the world and value diverse scientific perspectives.
- Intellectual Honesty. Present your work truthfully. Give proper credit to collaborators and sources. Uphold the highest standards of academic integrity.
- Constructive Collaboration. Offer and receive feedback in the spirit of improving scientific work. Disagreements should be grounded in evidence and data, not personal attacks.
Prohibited Topics and Activities
To maintain a focused and welcoming environment for all members, the following are strictly prohibited in all SoTS spaces, including but not limited to labs, courses, events, online platforms, and communications:
- No political discussions of any kind. This includes political opinions, political figures, political parties, government policies, geopolitical disputes, or country-related political commentary.
- No religious discussions. Personal religious beliefs and religious debates have no place in our scientific community spaces.
- No ideological debates. SoTS is not a forum for political, religious, or ideological arguments. Members who wish to engage in such discussions should do so outside of SoTS spaces.
- No harassment or bullying. Any form of intimidation, discrimination, personal attacks, or unwelcome behavior directed at another member is prohibited.
- No academic dishonesty. Plagiarism, data fabrication, and misrepresentation of work are serious violations.
Why These Rules Exist
SoTS serves teen scientists from many countries, cultures, and backgrounds. Political and religious topics can be divisive and distracting, pulling focus away from the scientific work that unites us. By keeping our spaces strictly focused on science, we ensure that every member feels welcome and can participate fully regardless of their personal beliefs or national origin.
Science is our common language. It transcends borders, cultures, and personal beliefs. We ask all members to honor this by keeping SoTS a place where the only debates are scientific ones.
Consequences
Violations of this Code of Conduct may result in:
- A verbal or written warning
- Temporary suspension from SoTS activities
- Permanent removal from the Society of Teen Scientists
The severity of the response will depend on the nature of the violation. SoTS leadership reserves the right to take any action deemed necessary to maintain a safe, focused, and productive scientific community.
Reporting
If you experience or witness a violation of this Code of Conduct, please report it promptly. All reports will be handled confidentially and taken seriously.
